London Human Rights First Forum Lecture in London
On 30 September 2024, the first London Human Rights Forum lecture was held at the Royal National Hotel in central London. The London Human Rights Forum is organized by the charity China Studies. The first forum was chaired by Hua Huang, Co-Chief Executive of China Studies. The keynote speakers were Archbishop Dr Costas Evangelou and independent author Mr. Ma Jian. In addition, four other Chinese citizens gave presentations at the forum. China Studies Executive Committee Chairman Wang Guanru, Vice Chairman Jiang Yushan, Thomas Hao and other leaders attended the forum. The forum was attended by an audience of 55 people.
The purpose of China Studies is to discuss, research, publicise and promote human rights in China with the basic aim of promoting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. At the same time, all activities will be run in strict compliance with UK charity law. Our forum, the Human Rights Forum, will become an institutionalised activity of our organisation. We will regularly invite human rights activists from all over the world to discuss, study and publicise the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in this forum with ordinary Chinese people, in order to promote the improvement of the human rights situation in China.
Archbishop Dr Costas Evangelou was awarded the MBE on 19 March 2019 by the Royal Family. He currently chairs the China Studies Advisory Board. He lectured at the Forum on the topic: on human rights and the advocacy role of Christian churches. He introduced the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the United Nations on 10 December 1948, and explained the relationship between human rights and the Christian church. He answered questions from the Chinese audience.
Mr Ma Jian, winner of the Thomas Cook Travelling Literature Prize for his novel Illegal Wanderings and one of the top 50 global writers of the century in the 2005 edition of the French monthly magazine Le Reader, gave a talk entitled: Chinese Politics and Literature. He focused on the representation of human rights issues in China in his literary works and answered questions from the Chinese audience.
The London Human Rights Forum will endeavour to create a platform for discussion between ordinary Chinese and global human rights scholars and activists. That is why we invited five other Chinese citizens to speak at this event. They are Yu Weiliang, Wei Chenyu, Zhu Zhuyong, Wang Yujun and Zhou Yong. They introduced the current situation of human rights in China as they understood it.
The atmosphere was harmonious, welcoming and free-flowing from start to finish. The Chinese audience came from all over the UK. They were from all parts of the UK, regardless of party affiliation, faith or profession. They all had a common goal, which was to care for and promote human rights in China. Many of the Chinese audience signed up with the moderator at the end of the forum to speak on stage next time. They said that in the UK, they can tell the truth and express their views freely without fear.
